Custom SCBA-to-Scuba Fill Adapter for a Public Safety Dive Team
Many fire departments and rescue agencies already have compressed breathing-air systems used to fill SCBA, commonly called air-pack, cylinders.
A department that also operates a public safety dive team may encounter a practical problem: its existing SCBA fill station may not have the correct connection for filling the scuba cylinders used by the dive team.
That was the situation facing one of the public safety dive teams supported by Sink or Swim Scuba.
The department already had the breathing-air infrastructure. What it needed was a practical way to connect properly configured dive cylinders to its existing fill system.
We developed a custom SCBA-to-scuba fill adapter for the department and created a video explaining how its team should use the equipment.

The Challenge: Using Existing Department Fill Equipment

The dive team therefore needed a way to use its department’s existing air-pack fill station to fill its dive cylinders without depending entirely on an outside fill location.
The goal was not simply to attach one fitting to another. The complete system and intended use had to be considered before determining whether an adapter was appropriate.

The adapter allowed authorized department personnel to connect compatible scuba cylinders to the department’s SCBA fill system.

Can a Fire Department Fill Scuba Cylinders from an SCBA Fill Station?
In some situations, a department may be able to use its existing SCBA breathing-air system to fill compatible scuba cylinders.
However, this should never be assumed based only on the appearance of the fittings.
Before using an SCBA fill station for scuba cylinders, the department should evaluate factors including:
- The rated pressure of the fill system
- The rated working pressure of the scuba cylinders
- The cylinder valve configuration
- DIN, yoke, and SCBA connection compatibility
- The pressure ratings of hoses, adapters, and fittings
- The quality and suitability of the breathing air
- Cylinder inspection and testing status
- Manufacturer requirements
- Departmental policies and operating procedures
- Training for the personnel operating the equipment
An adapter that is appropriate for one department’s equipment may not be appropriate for another department.
