Can My Kids Get Certified to Dive With Me?
Brent Clevenger Feb 22, 2025
Are you a parent who loves scuba diving and wants to share the underwater world with your children? The great news is that kids can absolutely get certified to dive with you! At Sink or Swim Scuba, we offer programs designed specifically for young divers so families can explore the ocean together.
What Is the Minimum Age for Scuba Certification?
Children as young as 10 years old can enroll in our SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course. Once they complete their training, they will earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which allows them to dive under the supervision of a certified adult. Learn more about the Junior Open Water certification on the SDI website.
What If My Child Is Younger Than 10?
For children as young as 8 years old, we offer a Future Buddies Program, which introduces kids to the basics of scuba diving in a safe and fun environment. This is a great way to get them comfortable with the water and prepare them for full certification when they turn 10.
How Deep Can Kids Dive?
While junior divers have depth restrictions for safety, they can still enjoy incredible underwater adventures with their parents. The Junior Open Water certification allows 10- and 11-year-olds to dive to a maximum depth of 40 feet, while 12- to 14-year-olds can go as deep as 60 feet. Once they turn 15, they can upgrade to a standard Open Water Diver certification with no depth restrictions.
Why Get Certified as a Family?
Scuba diving is an amazing family activity that builds confidence, teamwork, and unforgettable memories. Our programs are designed to make learning fun and engaging for kids while ensuring parents feel confident diving with their children.
