Do I need my own scuba gear to start the course?

Students are required to have their own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots for the course. Properly fitted personal gear helps students stay comfortable and develop better diving skills during training.

We strongly encourage divers to wait before purchasing additional scuba equipment until meeting with our instructors. This allows us to help ensure your gear fits properly, meets your needs, and works well with your training. Our goal is to help you make informed purchases, not rushed ones.  When you purchase your basic snorkel equipment from us the rest of your rental equipment is includedj at no cost.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to learn scuba diving?

You do not need to be an expert swimmer, but basic water comfort is required. Students must be able to swim 200 yards and float for 10 minutes as part of the certification process. These requirements ensure students are comfortable and safe in the water during training.

Common Concerns from New Divers

Many people considering scuba certification have questions or concerns before getting started. These are some of the most common things we hear from new divers in the Charlotte and Gastonia area.

“I’m nervous about breathing underwater.”

That’s completely normal. One of the first things we teach is how to breathe comfortably and calmly using scuba equipment. Students practice these skills in a controlled environment with an instructor present, allowing them to build confidence step by step.

Most new divers are surprised at how natural breathing underwater feels after just a few minutes of practice.

“I’m not a strong swimmer.”

You do not need to be a competitive swimmer to learn scuba diving. The certification requirements simply ensure that students are comfortable in the water and can manage themselves safely.

Many successful divers start with average swimming ability and develop greater comfort in the water as their training progresses.

“What if I feel uncomfortable underwater?”

Our instructors work closely with each student and move at a comfortable pace. Training is designed to build skills gradually, allowing students to develop comfort and confidence before moving to the next step.

No one is rushed through the process. Our goal is to develop confident, capable divers, not just issue certification cards.

“Am I too old to learn scuba diving?”

Scuba diving is enjoyed by people of all ages. As long as you meet the basic health requirements and feel comfortable in the water, age is rarely a limiting factor.

Many divers begin their certification in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond.

“Is scuba diving safe?”

When taught properly and practiced responsibly, scuba diving is a very safe activity. Training focuses heavily on safety, awareness, and problem-solving skills so divers understand how to manage situations calmly and confidently.

Professional instruction and proper equipment are the foundation of safe diving.

Received my open water certification from sink or swim, they do everything they can to ensure students receive the training they need to be successful in the course. I enjoyed the course, the e-learning allows you to work through the book work at your own pace, and their flexibility for pool and open water options make this very accessible. I completed my open water portion of the class during the yearly Florida trip, highly recommend, but quarry diving is awesome too!
