Ready to dive into the underwater world? At Sink or Swim Scuba, we're passionate about helping you achieve your scuba diving dreams. One of the first steps on your journey to becoming a certified SDI Open Water Diver is the swim test. Don't let this part intimidate you! Let's break down what's involved and how you can prepare.

What is the SDI Open Water Diver Swim Test?

The SDI Open Water Diver program requires a basic level of comfort and proficiency in the water. This ensures your safety and enjoyment as you learn to scuba dive. According to the official SDI standards, the swim test consists of two parts:

  • Distance Swim:
    • 200 meters non-stop using any stroke without mask, snorkel, or fins.
    • OR 300 meters non-stop using mask, snorkel, and fins.
  • Survival Swim/Float:
    • 10 minutes of survival floating or treading water.

Demystifying the Swim Test: It's Easier Than You Think!

Many people hear "swim test" and immediately feel nervous. But here's the truth: it's designed to assess basic water comfort, not Olympic-level swimming skills.

As we like to say at Sink or Swim Scuba, "If you 'think' you can swim, you can probably swim well enough." On the other hand, "If you 'know' you can't swim, you probably can't swim well enough."

We're looking for confidence and a reasonable level of fitness in the water.

Why is the Swim Test Important?

  • Safety: Scuba diving involves being in open water. Being comfortable and capable in the water is essential for your safety and the safety of your dive buddies.
  • Confidence: Completing the swim test builds confidence, which is crucial for a positive learning experience.
  • Enjoyment: When you're comfortable in the water, you can fully enjoy the incredible experience of scuba diving.

Tips for Preparing for Your Swim Test:

  • Practice Regularly: Spend time in the pool practicing your swimming and floating skills.
  • Build Endurance: Focus on building your cardiovascular endurance to make the distance swim easier.
  • Stay Relaxed: Remember, it's about comfort, not speed. Relax and focus on maintaining a steady pace.
  • Consider using Mask, snorkel, and fins: If you are nervous about the 200 meter swim, the 300 meter swim with mask, snorkel, and fins is often easier.
