When people ask what makes Sink or Swim Scuba different, we'd rather let our divers answer than tell you ourselves. Over the past couple of years, folks from across Gastonia, Charlotte, and far beyond have taken the time to share their experiences with our shop — and reading back through them, a few themes come up again and again: honest advice, patient instruction, fast and friendly service, and a dive community that feels like family.

We were also proud to be voted Best Dive Shop in the Charlotte area for 2025 by the Elevate Lifestyle Best of the City Awards — but recognition like that means the most coming from the divers we serve every day. Here's what they have to say.

Learning to Dive: Scuba Training & Certification

Getting certified should be exciting, not intimidating — and a big part of our job is making every new diver feel confident in the water. That comes through loud and clear in reviews about our scuba certification and dive training.

Nathan King put it simply: "What an experience! Staff is extremely knowledgeable! Instructor is very knowledgeable and patient!" That patience matters — as we always say, there's no such thing as a bad question when you're learning to dive.

New divers like Medgine Etienne felt it before they even got in the water: "Everyone was very kind and helpful! I can't wait for my course with them!" And Shuna Harper didn't hold back: "Mr. Brent WAS EVERYTHING WE WANTED AND NEEDED IN FINDING A NEW DIVE SHOP! This is the place for beginners to advanced — you will not go wrong!"

Families find a home here too. Mindy Young shared that her son completed his first dive with us: "I absolutely love and respect everyone at Sink or Swim! They are very professional and friendly!" Helping young divers discover the underwater world through safe, fun instruction is one of the most rewarding things we do — often starting with a Discover Scuba experience or an afternoon in our snorkeling program.

We hear the same from divers earning their Open Water certification — Justin Payseur ("Excellent experience for scuba lessons. Definitely will be diving with them in the future."), Woodson Burden ("Best dive shop around! Their instructor is super helpful."), and Cameron Voegele, who praised our instructors and divemasters for going out of their way to make sure students are ready.

Choosing scuba equipment should never feel like a high-pressure sales pitch. Jake Linares captured exactly what we aim for: "A great local dive shop with a welcoming and knowledgeable staff. They take the time to answer questions and never make you feel pressured."

Whether it's picking out the right fins for an upcoming trip — like The Bad Boyscout, who came in for fins and left with advice for his whole vacation — getting set up with gear for an Open Water class at a fair price (thanks, Adrian Barger), or grabbing a replacement mask and snorkel before a getaway (Paul St Germain, headed to St. Thomas), the goal is always the same: the right equipment for how you actually dive.

And that expertise reaches well beyond Gastonia. Nick Hodgkiss found us online all the way from the Pacific Northwest and trusted us with his HOG regulator purchase: "Anyone not giving these folks a 5-star review is crazy. Their customer service is on point." Malesha McVay shopped with us from Alabama, and Andrea Wellhouse drove in from the Raleigh area for the right replacement part before a Cozumel trip. If you can't make it to the shop, our online scuba store ships nationwide — though we'll always say the in-person experience is the best part.

Fast, Friendly Air & Nitrox Fills

A good dive starts with a good fill. We're proud to be the go-to shop for air and nitrox fills across the region — and our regulars notice.

Star Lowery keeps it short and sweet: "Service was great as always!" Steven Edwards, a longtime customer, said it best: "Brent always makes sure fast service is happening. Brent was training a new employee today and still made me feel important." That's the standard — even on a busy day, every diver matters.

We also fill more than scuba tanks. As Scott Pope discovered, we handle high-pressure fills for air rifles, paintball, Pepper Ball systems, and other approved cylinders alongside scuba air and nitrox. Alexander Litwinenko came in for a tank service, air fill, and visual inspection while getting back into diving — exactly the kind of all-in-one support we love to provide.

Serving Public Safety Dive Teams

Beyond recreational diving, we're honored to support public safety dive teams with equipment, training, and readiness support. Britton Winter's team worked with us on a diver communication equipment bid, and his words mean a great deal to us: he couldn't say enough about the support, training, and commitment to doing things the right way. Supporting the safety and readiness of dive teams is a mission we take seriously — distance is never a barrier when a team is committed to professionalism.

A Dive Community That Feels Like Family

More than anything, what our divers describe is a community. Charles Saunders summed it up: "Love the dive community here." Christian Rizzo told fellow divers to "patronize with confidence." And Dave Harris said it all: "Great instruction, free advice, and top-level customer service. This shop has everything you'll ever need and a few things you'll just want."
