How to Choose a Dive Shop: What Awards, Ratings, and “#1” Claims Really Mean

Short answer: Not all dive shop awards mean the same thing. Some are voted on by actual divers, some are earned through a certification agency's audit, some are generated by software reading Google reviews, and some are just a line a shop wrote about itself. If you're choosing a dive shop in the Charlotte area, here's how to tell the difference — from someone who's been on the inside of this industry for more than 20 years.

The four kinds of "awards" you'll see on dive shop pages

1. Voted awards. These come from a publication or community poll where real customers cast votes. Sink or Swim Scuba was voted Best Dive Shop in Charlotte in 2025 — and the part that matters isn't the plaque, it's that divers took the time to vote. Nobody at the shop got to decide the outcome.

2. Agency facility ratings. Training agencies rate their shops on instructor staff, training standards, and facilities. We're an SDI 5-Star Instructor Training Facility and an ERDI training facility — designations the agency grants based on what a shop actually offers, including the ability to train instructors, not just students. Whatever agency a shop teaches through, a facility rating is worth more than a slogan, because someone outside the shop verified it.

3. Review-based recognitions. Some companies scan Google reviews and issue "Best of" plaques to high scorers. These are legitimate as far as they go — they reflect real reviews — but they're automated. Skip the plaque and go read the reviews themselves. What customers say in their own words tells you more than any badge.

4. Self-proclaimed titles. "#1 shop in the region." "The area's premier dive center." If no publication, agency, or customer vote is behind a claim, it's marketing copy. That doesn't make a shop bad — but it's a claim, not an award, and you're allowed to ask who awarded it.

What actually predicts a good experience

Awards are a shortcut, not the destination. When I'm asked how to pick a shop, here's what I tell people to look at:

  • Read the Google reviews — especially the detailed ones that mention instructors by name.
  • Ask how long they've been in business. Dive shops that take care of people tend to still be around 10 and 20 years later. We've been serving Gastonia and Charlotte for over two decades.
  • Check for a real service department. A factory-authorized repair bench means the manufacturers themselves vetted the shop. We service Atomic, Hollis, Zeagle, Oceanic, Sherwood, Interspiro, OTS and more in house.
  • Walk in and talk to them. Ten minutes in a shop tells you more than an hour on its website. You'll know quickly whether they want to build a diver or just make a sale.

Does the certification agency matter?

You'll notice shops around Charlotte teach through different agencies — we teach SDI, others teach PADI. Both certifications are recognized worldwide, and I've written up exactly why we chose SDI in SDI vs PADI: Which Scuba Certification Is Right for You? The short version: the agency on the card matters less than the quality of the shop and instructor behind it — and that's exactly what the awards above help you judge.
