Dive Shop in Charlotte, NC: What Sink or Swim Scuba Offers

Brent Clevenger   Oct 11, 2026

Short answer: A dive shop is a one-stop scuba center — the place you go to learn to dive, get certified, buy and rent gear, fill your tanks with air or nitrox, and have your equipment serviced. If you're looking for a dive shop in the Charlotte, NC area, Sink or Swim Scuba handles all of that under one roof, plus specialty work most shops don't touch, like public safety diving support. Here's exactly what we do and who we help.

What does a dive shop in Charlotte, NC actually offer?

Most people find a dive shop for one of five reasons, and a full-service shop like ours covers every one of them:

  • Learn to dive and get certified. This is where most new divers start. We teach the SDI Open Water course — the entry-level certification that lets you rent gear and dive with a buddy anywhere in the world. You start with eLearning on your own schedule, then move on to pool sessions and four open water checkout dives. If you've never breathed underwater before, this is step one, and if you'd like to try it before committing to a full course, ask about our SDI Discover Scuba program. See Learn to Dive in Charlotte or our scuba certification page for how it works.
  • Air and nitrox fills. Once you're certified and own a tank, you'll need it filled before every dive. We fill air and nitrox for divers across the Charlotte and Gastonia area, and we handle the annual visual inspections and hydrostatic testing that keep your cylinder current and fill-ready.
  • Buy and rent gear. Masks, fins, regulators, BCDs, computers, exposure suits, and tanks — new and used. We also carry used steel scuba tanks for divers who want a solid cylinder without the new-tank price.
  • Service and repair. Regulators and gear need periodic servicing to stay safe. We service Atomic, Hollis, Zeagle, Oceanic, Sherwood, Interspiro, OTS, and more in our factory-authorized shop, and most repairs are finished in under two weeks, so you're not sending your gear off and waiting. See our local service and repair page.
  • Specialty and professional diving. Beyond recreation, we support public safety diving teams and are an Interspiro distributor for professional full-face mask and surface-supplied systems.

Where is Sink or Swim Scuba located?

We're at 4310K Wilkinson Blvd in Gastonia, NC 28056, just west of Charlotte, and we serve divers from across the Charlotte area, including Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, and Belmont. We're open Wednesday through Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM, and closed Sunday through Tuesday. Whether you're in uptown Charlotte or out by the lakes, we'd rather you stop in and talk through what you need than guess from a website.

Do I need to be certified to buy gear or get air fills?

You don't need certification to buy most gear, browse, or ask questions — but you do need an entry-level certification to rent scuba equipment, get tanks filled, and dive without an instructor. That's a safety standard shops follow everywhere, not just here. The good news: getting certified is faster than most people expect, and we teach classes year round. If you're not sure diving is for you yet, start with our SDI Discover Scuba program and test the water first. Start at Learn to Dive in Charlotte or read about our SDI Open Water course.

What makes a good dive shop?

A good dive shop isn't just a store — it's the people who keep diving in your life. The shop that certifies you is where you'll come back to fill tanks, upgrade gear, book your next trip, and get the honest answer when something doesn't feel right with your equipment. We're a family-owned shop, and we've been doing this in Gastonia for more than 20 years, and we were voted Best Dive Shop in Charlotte in 2025. We'd rather build divers who keep diving than sell a mask and never see you again.
