Interspiro Divator vs OTS Guardian vs OTS Spectrum full face mask comparison

Short answer: all three are good full face masks, but they are built for different jobs. The Interspiro Divator is the positive-pressure mask built for black water, contaminated water and surface-supplied diving, and it is what most fire and police dive teams standardize on when the water is the worst. The OTS Guardian is a comms-ready, lower-cost mask that fits a wide range of faces and is a strong choice for teams building their first full face program. The OTS Spectrum is the budget-friendly way into full face diving: you bolt on the second stage you already own, and it is a good fit for recreational divers, training programs and teams that want every diver in a full face mask without buying a Guardian for each one. Here is how we break it down for the departments and divers we outfit.

Why a public safety dive team wears a full face mask at all

A standard mask and regulator works fine in a quarry on a Saturday. It does not work well when you are searching a retention pond by feel, the water is cold enough to free-flow a regulator, or the pond is full of things you do not want touching your mouth and nose. A full face mask seals the diver's whole face, keeps a regulator in place even if the diver is bumped or goes unconscious, and gives the surface tender a way to actually talk to the diver instead of guessing from line pulls. That is the whole reason this category exists for public safety diving.

Interspiro Divator

The Divator (you will still hear old-timers call it the AGA mask) is the mask the military, commercial and rescue world has used for decades, and it is the one we dive ourselves at Sink or Swim Scuba. The things that matter in the field:

  • Safety pressure (positive pressure). The safety-pressure breathing valve keeps a slight positive pressure inside the mask from the first breath, so if the seal is disturbed, air goes out and water does not come in. In contaminated water that is not a nicety, it is the point.
  • Cold water performance. The balanced breathing valve has a one-way valve in the inhalation path that keeps water out of the mechanism, which is why Divators are the mask of choice for ice and swift-water teams.
  • Surface supply ready. The Divator pairs with the Interspiro DP1 surface panel and the RS4 regulator, so the same mask the diver trains in on scuba is the mask they use on a hose with a bail-out bottle. Very few masks make that transition this cleanly.
  • Skirt and valve options. Black silicone, yellow silicone, natural rubber or EPDM skirts, normal-pressure or safety-pressure valve, and a hatch version for comms or a backup regulator. One mask line covers the whole team.
  • Serviceable for the long haul. Service kits, visors, inner masks and hatch parts are all available, and we are a factory-authorized Interspiro service center, so a 15-year-old Divator is still a working mask.

Where it is not the right pick: a recreational diver who wants something light for vacation diving. The Divator is a professional tool and is priced and built like one.

OTS Guardian

Ocean Technology Systems built the Guardian with communications in mind from day one, and it has become a very common mask on U.S. dive teams. What it does well:

  • Comms-ready out of the box. A dedicated communications port takes a Buddy Phone or an earphone and microphone assembly, which plugs straight into OTS surface stations like the MK-III or a PowerCom wireless unit. If talking to the diver is your first priority, the Guardian makes that easy.
  • Ambient Breathing Valve. The ABV lets the diver breathe surface air with the mask on while waiting on the bank or the boat, saving tank gas and letting the team run a check before the diver ever gets wet.
  • Fits more faces. A double face seal and a smaller oral-nasal pocket mean one mask fits a wider range of divers, which matters when a department is buying for a roster, not an individual.
  • Price. The Guardian generally comes in well under the Divator, which is why a lot of teams start here. See our current OTS Guardian pricing and colors.

Where it is not the right pick: the Guardian is not a positive-pressure mask in the way the Divator safety-pressure valve is, and it is not designed as a surface-supplied mask. For teams that dive heavily contaminated water or want to move to surface supply later, we usually steer them toward the Divator.

OTS Spectrum

The Spectrum is OTS's entry-level full face mask, and it fills a real gap for teams and divers who want full face protection without the Guardian price:

  • Use the regulator you already own. The Spectrum ships without a second stage. Any standard second stage mounts into the glass-filled nylon housing on a 3/8" hose, so a department can put its existing regulators to work instead of buying new ones.
  • Comms-ready. It has a communications port that takes the OTS Buddy Phone or an Aquacom earphone/microphone, so it talks to the same surface stations as the Guardian.
  • Tempered glass lens (clear or mirrored) that can take bonded prescription lenses, a liquid-silicone double-seal skirt in a universal fit, stainless hardware and a five-point spider strap.
  • Optional Ambient Breathing Valve. The ABV is an add-on rather than standard, and it must be closed before the diver goes under.
  • Price. The Spectrum comes in well under the Guardian, which makes it a practical choice for training fleets, backup masks and recreational divers trying full face for the first time.

Where it is not the right pick: contaminated water, surface supply or any mission where positive pressure matters. The Spectrum is a sealed mask with a standard demand regulator, not a positive-pressure system, and it has less lens area and fewer features than the Guardian. We stock OTS as a Gold dealer, so the Spectrum, the Guardian and the comms that go with them all ship from the same shop. See OTS Spectrum pricing, skirt and lens options, the Spectrum ABV, or the OTS full face mask and comms page.

How we help teams decide

We dive these masks on real calls, not just in a pool. When a department asks which one to buy, the questions we ask back are simple: What is the worst water you will be in? Do you want to run surface supply in the next few years? How many divers and how many faces? Will you service it in-house or send it to us? Answer those and the choice usually makes itself. If you want to put a Divator, a Guardian and a Spectrum on your divers side by side before you commit, we can set up a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Interspiro Divator the same as the AGA mask?
Yes. AGA was the original maker; Interspiro now builds it as the Divator. Parts and service kits for older AGA-marked masks are still available.

Can an OTS Guardian be used in contaminated water?
It can be used with proper decontamination procedures, but it is not a positive-pressure mask. For heavily contaminated or hazmat diving, most teams choose the Divator safety-pressure valve.

Which full face mask works with surface-supplied air?
The Interspiro Divator, paired with the DP1 surface panel and RS4 regulator. It is the most common surface-supplied setup on U.S. public safety teams.

Can I dive a Divator or Guardian recreationally?
Yes. Both are public safety masks first, but they work fine for recreational diving. The Spectrum is the one built with recreational divers in mind.

Do you train teams on these masks?
Yes. We teach ERDI full face mask and surface-supplied courses and can train your technicians to service their own Interspiro masks.
