In the pre-COVID era, our scuba certification program involved a more traditional approach: 3-5 evenings of classroom instruction, a full day in the pool, and then two days of open water dives at a local quarry or a weekend trip to the beautiful Florida springs. While effective, this format required a significant time commitment.
Now, we've streamlined the process to make it more flexible and convenient, especially with the rise of online learning.
The Modern Scuba Certification Journey: A Step-by-Step Breakdown
Our current Open Water Diver program focuses on maximizing your time in the water and minimizing classroom time. Here’s how it works:

E-Learning: Your Underwater Classroom at Home: Forget stuffy classrooms! Now, the academic portion of your scuba training is completed online, at your own pace. This means you can study whenever and wherever it suits you – on your lunch break, in the evenings, or even on your commute (as a passenger, of course!). You'll cover essential topics like dive physics, physiology, equipment, safety procedures, and responsible diving practices.

Gear Up: The Equipment Meeting: Once you’ve finished the online coursework, you’ll give us a call to schedule an equipment meeting. This is where things get real! We'll go over essential gear you might want to purchase, like a mask, fins, and snorkel. We'll also have you try on our rental gear, which is available at no cost for our open water students. This ensures you have a comfortable and properly fitting setup for your dives. This meeting allows us to answer all your questions about gear, and make sure you are comfortable and ready to get in the water.

Confined Water Dives (Pool Time!): Next up is the pool! This is where you'll put your knowledge into practice and learn essential scuba skills in a controlled environment. You’ll practice everything from clearing your mask to mastering buoyancy control.

Open Water Dives: The Real Deal: After mastering the basics in the pool, it's time to experience the magic of open water diving! You'll complete a minimum of four open water dives under the direct supervision of a certified instructor. These dives are typically conducted over two days, often during a weekend.

Florida Springs Option: For those seeking an extra special experience, we offer optional trips to the stunning Florida springs. These crystal-clear, warm water dives offer incredible visibility and a unique diving environment. This option does involve an additional cost, but it's a fantastic way to complete your open water dives in a truly memorable setting.
How Long Does It Really Take?
Because of the flexibility of e-learning, the total time to get certified can vary. However, here’s a general idea:
- E-Learning: This depends on your study habits, but most people complete it within a few days to a week or two.
- Equipment Meeting: This is a short meeting, usually lasting about an hour.
- Confined Water and Open Water Dives: We often schedule these over a single weekend, making it convenient for busy schedules.
